Introduction: Why is it increasingly difficult to find “quiet”?

In today’s era of digital overload, our visual systems process tens of thousands of fragmented pieces of information daily. Saturated colors, complex shapes, and excessive decoration are, in essence, “visual noise.” As an architect with 20 years of experience, I have observed a common pitfall in interior design: the attempt to trade “filling” for “security.”

However, true spatial healing often begins with “emptying.”

I. Taoist Philosophy: Emptiness as the Origin of Energy

Laozi stated in the Tao Te Ching: “We shape clay into a pot, but it is the emptiness inside that holds whatever we want. We hammer wood for a house, but it is the inner space that makes it livable.” Zhuangzi further proposed, “In an empty room, light is born; in stillness, blessings rest.”

This ultimate law of minimalism tells us: only in an empty room can light penetrate, and only in stillness can auspiciousness remain. In design, “whiteness” is not a color but a state; “emptiness” is not a lack, but a vessel for light, air, and the emotions of the inhabitants.

II. Neuroscientific Perspective: From Task Mode to Default Mode

Why do we subconsciously take a deep breath when entering a minimalist, pure space? This is not mere psychological suggestion, but a shift in the brain’s physiological mechanisms:

1. Deactivating the Task Positive Network (TPN): When an environment is cluttered, the brain’s visual cortex constantly performs “feature extraction,” consuming vast cognitive resources. Minimalist spaces effectively deactivate this high-energy-consumption mode.

2. Activating the Default Mode Network (DMN): In spaces with minimal physical noise, the brain shifts from external exploration to internal awareness, spontaneously generating Alpha waves. This is the breeding ground for deep creativity and inspiration.

III. Design Application: How to Create an “Empty Room of Light”?

In the design practice of XERLIFE+, we pursue extreme “spatial entropy reduction”:

  • Geometric Purity: Eliminating complex decorations and using continuous planes to guide visual flow.
  • Spatial Void for Light: Allowing the architecture to become a vessel for light, recording the passage of time.
  • Invisible Storage: Physically hiding trivialities, leaving only natural materials that evoke resonance.

结语

Conclusion

“Emptiness begets light” is not a form of scarcity, but a sophisticated spatial prescription. Within the logic of XERLIFE+, we use design to return your residence to nature and your brain to its source of tranquility.
