Unity of Heaven and Human: The Best Floor Plan Lets Wind and Light Design for You | XERLIFE+ Journal

Have you ever had this experience: some homes feel “right” the moment you step in — you can’t say what’s good about them, but your breathing smooths out; other homes are exquisitely decorated, yet always feel stuffy and confining.
The difference is usually not in the design — it’s in “heaven.” Where sunlight enters, how wind passes through, how far the trees stand from the windows — these parameters set by “heaven” determine a home’s comfort more than any styling.
Chapter 25 of the Tao Te Ching says: “Humans follow the Earth; the Earth follows Heaven; Heaven follows the Way; the Way follows what is natural.” Translated into the language of space: the best home is not forced into being by people — it “grows” out of the natural order.
Behind this lies a young discipline called neuroarchitecture, which studies how the built environment affects the human brain and body. Research consistently finds: the height and scale of spaces, the strength and direction of light, the movement of air — all act continuously through the senses on the endocrine and nervous systems. In environments that conform to natural laws, people’s stress levels are lower and moods steadier; conversely, sealed, dim, scale-imbalanced spaces keep people in a state of faint, long-term vigilance.
Why? Because natural signals are the brain’s “safety code.” Millions of years of evolution have taught the brain by default: places with sunlight, wind, and plants equal safety; sealed, dark places with no signs of life equal danger. Your brain runs a “safety scan” on every space every day — you just can’t feel it.
So how do you let your home “follow what is natural”? Three techniques:
First, align spatial scale and orientation with nature. Face the living room south where possible, and leave a channel for sunlight; where ceiling height allows, don’t drop a full false ceiling that presses the sky down. In a space of generous scale, even breathing goes deeper.
Second, let natural light and ventilation outrank decoration. First make sure the windows are placed right and open wide enough; then talk about beautiful walls. Sunlight moves, wind has paths — let them be the protagonists of the space.
Third, let indoors and outdoors interpenetrate. Plant a few things on the balcony, keep a patch of green before the window, invite tree shadows in with floor-to-ceiling glass. Even a small potted plant tells the brain: it’s safe here — there is life.
“Humans follow the Earth; the Earth follows Heaven; Heaven follows the Way; the Way follows what is natural” — the highest state of a home is to move in as if moving into nature. Return the home to nature, and nature returns your good state to you.
Your home is not for looking at — it is for nurturing your brain.
