From the perspective of brain neuroscience, I’ll explain how to design SOHO office spaces. | XERLIFE+ Journal

Two years of working from home and your productivity keeps sliding? The problem isn’t you — it’s your desk.
Working at the Dining Table = A Constantly Divided Brain
You eat, scroll your phone, take meetings and write PPTs in the same space. For your brain this is a disaster, because “space–behavior associations” get scrambled. Normally the brain anchors behavior patterns to spaces: bedroom = rest, dining room = eating, office = work. But when you work from home, every behavior is squeezed into the same space. The brain doesn’t know which mode to activate — so all modes stay half-activated. Result: you want to lie down while working, and you want to work while resting.
Build a Spatial Boundary
Even a 1.5-meter-wide corner will do. Use it for work only. No meals, no shows, no phone scrolling in this corner. After three months, your brain builds an automatic association — walk to this corner and the prefrontal cortex switches into focus mode by itself. This is called “environmental priming.”
The Fine Print on Your Line of Sight
A one-way view is best — face a window or a blank wall. If you can’t, sit with your back to the room’s main traffic path. Every time a person or a pet passes through your peripheral vision, that’s a cognitive interruption. After each interruption, it takes about 23 minutes to return to your previous level of focus. Interrupted five times a day, that’s nearly two hours of deep work lost.
The Closing Ritual
When you finish work, do one thing — turn off the desk lamp, push in the chair, close the laptop. This is a “spatial closure ritual.” It tells your brain: today’s work mode is over, time to switch. The hardest part of working from home isn’t focus. It’s “switching off.” Let the space say it for you: work is done.
