The Irreplaceability of Natural Elements | XERLIFE+ Journal

You spent twenty thousand on a solid wood dining table. A friend says, “Wouldn’t the two-hundred-yuan laminate table work the same way?” It wouldn’t. Your brain knows the difference. Wood, stone, cotton and linen — these natural materials activate your parasympathetic nervous system. Plastic, stainless steel, glass — these artificial materials activate your sympathetic nervous system. This isn’t preference; it’s measurable on an EEG.
The Primordial Call of Wood
Japan conducted an experiment: subjects touched wood versus stainless steel plates while their blood pressure was measured. Wood group: blood pressure dropped by an average of 4mmHg. Stainless steel group: blood pressure rose by an average of 2mmHg. Why? Because human hands and wood co-evolved for two million years. When your hand holds wood, the tactile nerve signals coming in say “familiar, safe, warm.” Stainless steel, to our tactile system, is a “new species” — it has only existed for two hundred years.
The Stability of Stone
Stone has another name: “geological time.” A slab of marble formed hundreds of millions of years ago in the earth’s crustal movements. When your hand rests on a stone surface, what you feel is “the foundation of this world is solid.” In psychology, this is called the “grounding effect” — contact with materials that symbolize stability and permanence can alleviate existential anxiety. This is also why nearly every luxury hotel lobby uses stone — it transmits the message: “This place will never collapse.”
Plants Are Not Decoration
Greenery isn’t just nice to look at. Its presence is literally changing your brain waves. In rooms with plants, subjects’ theta-wave activity increases significantly — this is the frequency band shared by creativity and relaxation.
How to Apply
Hard finishes in natural materials: solid wood flooring, stone countertops, cotton-linen curtains. Soft furnishings with natural elements: a large-leaf plant, a rattan chair, a wool rug. At least one thing that is “alive” (a plant). The fewer plastic items, the better. Your ancestors spent two million years in the forest. They’ve only spent seventy years in IKEA.
