Why Round Corners Make You Relax | XERLIFE+ Journal

Why does IKEA barely make any sharp-cornered furniture? Not because of design style, but because someone is studying your brain.
Sharp vs. Round: The Amygdala Automatic Reaction
In 2007, the Bar & Neta team at Harvard Medical School conducted an experiment: they showed subjects images of sharp and round objects while simultaneously scanning their brains.
Result: sharp angles activated the amygdala; round corners did not. And this reaction occurred before conscious awareness — within roughly 100 milliseconds. Meaning: before you even “see” the sharp corner, your brain is already afraid.
This is called “low spatial frequency processing” — before conscious perception, the visual system does a rough scan of edge features. Sharp edges = potential threat.
Why Round Corners Are Superior
From an evolutionary perspective: nature has virtually no perfect right angles. Trees are round, stones are round, animals are curved. Right angles are man-made. So your brain’s first reaction to a right angle is “this is unnatural.”
The deeper reason round corners relax us: they suggest “this world is soft, safe, and approachable.” Right angles suggest “this world is hard, sharp, be careful.”
Design Applications
Desk: choose a round-cornered desktop. Dining table: round table > square table (people at round tables eat more and talk longer — research confirmed). Sofa: rounded armrests > angular armrests (you lean on them for longer). Children’s room: all rounded corners. Not to prevent bumps — but to prevent the brain from staying in “be careful” mode.
A good space should be like a pebble polished by a river — shaped, but without aggression.
